A Love Story

I guess you could say my love story goes back to when I was sixteen years old. I was two years into being able to touch my hair. Well, I guess I should say being responsible for taking care of my hair.  See my Mother didn't allow me or my sisters (three) to "play" in our hair until we were much older. We could forget about styling. The most we could do was curl our bangs or put our hair in a ponytail. Curling the bang was not a daily affair either.  Once it was curled, you better have a foam Goody roller to keep the curl...lol. Most of my friends had relaxed hair in grade school and wore their hair down.  I was unrelaxed and in ponytails (which thankfully went to one) until eighth grade. I didn't mind not having a relaxer...it just wasn't a big deal for me. I was never ashamed of my poofy braids. My Mom washed our hair weekly. After washing she'd part my hair put some Vaseline in it, put my hair in a few ponytails and braid it.  The next morning she would take out the braids and brush my hair...then back in ponytails. She did this until I was eleven or twelve years old. The only difference in her routine after that point was, she would blow dry my hair the next day. She would press my hair for special occasions. That's all she did besides making sure that I, nor anyone else was "playing" in my hair.

So why a relaxer you may ask? I guess I was old enough and getting ready to start high school. My Mother, and two older sisters stylist, Sybil, put in my first relaxer.  She was the only stylist that touched my hair. She was great, always concerned with the health of our hair. She knew if we strayed away from the "routine" or dabbled in crazy products. All she would say is, you need to stop doing that or throw that away. She moved locations several times, but wherever she went, we went. We were not "shop hoppers" and until I went natural I stuck with that same concept...if it's not broke then don't fix it. I thank her for making healthy hair the main focus...which in turn I stand by.  If it's not healthy, then what's the point.

My relaxed life was much of same...regular washing, deep conditioning and little manipulation. My hair has been every length. I tried all types of hairstyles, rinses and got highlights once. I mainly wore my hair wrapped. After I washed my hair, I'd curl my hair. I wrapped it nightly for the rest of the week. I fell in love with the "look" of natural hair, when I straw set my hair. I loved how full and big my hair was when I separated the curls. The older the style got the more I liked it...but never thought to go natural.

Fast forward to 2007...I was pregnant with my daughter and after not finding any sure answer on if the chemicals affected my child, I decided to stop relaxing. I loved my hair, the texture as the relaxer was growing out. Why I thought having relaxed hair would be easier after I had my daughter...I don't know.  I relaxed my hair one month after my daughter was born. That was the last time...never to look back. I transitioned for a year and a half. October 2008 I got the rest of the relaxer cut off.

I love, love, love my hair. I love the texture. I love the versatility. I love the way it makes me feel. I feel unique. I feel beautiful. Friends and strangers ask me about my hair and haircare all the time. I talk about hair all the time....hence the birth of

They Make Me Beautiful

Daydreaming, planning for the future, I stick my fingers into a forest of curls, coils, kinks and waves
navigating to the heart...the pulse of the matter
These roots
These roots are the beginning of it all
These roots are a foundation which I build upon
These roots give birth to my unique story
In a world of similarities
These roots give me my own identity, flava, flare
When I struggle, searching for a way, I go back to these roots
These roots are the beginning
These roots are strong and
These roots make me beautiful
